President Joe Biden’s recent positive Covid test is reflective of the ongoing surge in summer cases across the United States. Data from the CDC indicates that Covid infections are on the rise in 45 states, with no signs of decline anywhere in the country. Factors contributing to the uptick in cases include a lack of masking and precautions, increased travel, extreme heat driving people indoors, and new variants of the virus.
Public figures like Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, second gentleman Doug Emhoff, and others have also recently tested positive for Covid. There are concerns about new variants like FLiRT and LB.1, which may have mutations that make it easier for the virus to evade protection from vaccines or prior infections. The CDC notes that there is no distinct Covid-19 season, and the virus can spread widely at any time of year.
Experts are recommending that older adults who did not receive a spring vaccine dose get vaccinated now to allow for optimal protection before the fall. Additionally, those at risk for Covid complications who test positive should consider taking Paxlovid, an antiviral medication that can reduce the likelihood of hospitalization or death. Biden, who is 81, is currently taking Paxlovid after his recent Covid diagnosis, despite experiencing a rebound infection after a previous course of the medication.
