Donald Trump and his allies wasted no time in defining Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as a far-left agent after he was chosen as Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate. Trump campaign talking points labeled Walz as part of a “team of radicals,” while the Republican Senate candidate in Pennsylvania called Harris-Walz the most liberal presidential ticket in history. Other GOP figures echoed similar sentiments.
Many Republicans had expected Harris to pick Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, but she chose Walz instead. The Trump campaign criticized the decision, claiming Harris had succumbed to the far left by selecting Walz over Shapiro. Critics within the GOP called the choice a “total flop” and believed that Shapiro would have been a more strategic selection.
Vance, who was previously rumored as a potential running mate for Harris, voiced his disappointment over Harris choosing Walz, whom he criticized for being too far left. Harris defended her choice, describing Walz as a fighter for the middle class and emphasizing their shared vision for the election.
The Trump campaign immediately launched attacks on Harris and Walz, portraying them as failed, weak, and dangerously liberal. They plan to focus on Walz’s views on immigration, crime, and his response to the protests and riots in Minneapolis following George Floyd’s killing in 2020. Despite Walz’s efforts to address these issues and his success in improving Minnesota’s overall crime rate, the Trump campaign plans to use them as points of criticism.
