United States President Joe Biden passed the baton to his vice president and party nominee, Kamala Harris, during his keynote address at the 2024 Democratic National Convention. The event, held at the United Center in Chicago, featured a range of speakers and events, including protests outside the venue over Biden’s support of Israel’s war in Gaza.
Protesters outside the convention criticized the Democratic Party’s failure to curb support for Israel, despite concerns of human rights abuses in Gaza. Inside, speakers focused on the diversity of the Democratic Party and slammed Republican candidate Donald Trump, highlighting Harris’s historic candidacy as the first woman, South Asian person, and Black woman to run for president.
Speakers at the convention also criticized Trump’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in nearly 1.2 million deaths in the US. They shared personal stories of loss and blamed Trump for downplaying the crisis. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez delivered a passionate speech condemning Trump’s labor policies and championing Harris as a fighter for the middle class.
The night also featured a surprise appearance from Harris, who thanked Biden for his leadership and support. The convention aimed to highlight the values of the Democratic Party, including diversity, economic equality, and social justice. Biden’s decision to withdraw from the presidential race earlier in July marked the end of his tenure as president, with the convention serving as a tribute to his legacy.
