Vice President Kamala Harris criticized former President Donald Trump’s remarks on in vitro fertilization (IVF) during a recent Fox News town hall, calling his actions harmful to women and families. She highlighted the impact of Trump’s administration on abortion restrictions across the country, pointing to the appointment of Supreme Court justices who voted to overrule Roe v. Wade. Harris’s campaign criticized Trump’s “father of IVF” comments as an example of why women don’t trust him on reproductive health issues.
Trump, during the town hall, joked that he was the “father of IVF” and expressed support for the fertility treatment. He also praised the Supreme Court’s decision to leave abortion decisions to the states, leading to more than 20 states restricting or banning abortion since the end of Roe v. Wade. The issue of IVF gained attention in February when the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that embryos created through IVF are children, causing clinics to pause services. Legislation to protect IVF was later passed in the state.
Democrats have tried to pass federal legislation protecting IVF, but Republicans have blocked the efforts. In a recent NBC News poll, women favored Harris by a 14-point margin, with 53% believing she would handle abortion issues better compared to 34% for Trump. The gender gap in favorability and views on abortion could play a role in the 2024 election.
