BYU Football Concludes 2024 Season with Promising 10-2 Record
PROVO, UT — The Brigham Young University (BYU) football team wrapped up its 2024 season with a 30-18 victory over Houston, showcasing the Cougars’ resilience and potential despite an “incomplete” feel lingering from the campaign. Finishing with a commendable 10-2 record and a 7-2 mark in the Big 12, BYU celebrated its 19th 10-win season of the past century, with three of those occurring in the last five years.
Head coach Kalani Sitake, whose team was initially predicted to finish 13th in the Big 12, expressed pride in the achievements, noting the valuable lessons learned along the way. “We were looking for two more wins, as we left points on the field in critical games,” he acknowledged. Sitake pointed to the importance of minimizing mistakes and focusing on job execution for future success.
Key contributors included defensive coordinator Jay Hill, whose unit led the nation with 20 interceptions, and quarterback Jake Retzlaff, who demonstrated dual-threat capabilities throughout the season. The Cougars’ ground attack was vital in the victory over Houston, with notable performances from LJ Martin and a pivotal special teams play that shifted momentum decisively in their favor.
While they missed out on the Big 12 Championship, where Iowa State advanced for the first time in its history, the Cougars positioned themselves well for a potential bowl game appearance, likely heading to the Alamo Bowl or Pop-Tarts Bowl. The team’s year marks an encouraging step in its Big 12 journey, reinforcing BYU’s commitment to improvement as they aim to build upon this season’s foundation. “This is still just the beginning,” Sitake concluded, looking ahead to further growth in the upcoming seasons.
