Idaho Governor Brad Little signed into law House Bill 204, creating two new retro-style license plate designs honoring Idaho potatoes. These new designs will be available starting July 1, in addition to the existing “famous potatoes” standard license plate. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Doug Pickett, will provide Idaho drivers with the option to show their potato pride with three different license plate designs. The black license plate will cost $70 for initial issuance, with proceeds benefitting the Idaho Potato Commission and the state highway account. Renewals will cost $50, with a portion going to the commission and the highway account.
The Idaho Potato Commission hopes to use the funds from these plates to continue research on new potato varieties that are more heat and disease tolerant. The white and teal license plate design will not have an additional fee beyond regular registration, making it the most affordable option for Idaho drivers. The designs will feature the words “Idaho” at the top and “World Famous Potatoes” at the bottom.
With a history of license plates supporting the potato industry dating back to 1928, the Idaho Potato Commission is excited to see these new designs go into production. This initiative aims to promote Idaho potatoes and provide funding for ongoing efforts to improve and sustain the potato industry in the state.
