Celebrities Encouraged to Support LGBTQ+ Rights by Boycotting Hungary’s Pride Ban

The Peter Tatchell Foundation is urging celebrities slated to perform in Hungary to boycott the country in response to the recent ban on Pride marches and government surveillance of attendees using facial recognition software. The law, passed by Hungary’s ruling conservative Fidesz party led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, aims to protect children from exposure to homosexuality but is seen as an attack on free speech and LGBTQ rights.

Organizers of Budapest Pride have denounced the law, stating that it is a distraction and a wave of hatred, not a child-protection measure as claimed. In response, thousands of protesters have taken to the streets to demonstrate against Orbán’s authoritarian actions.

The foundation has called on celebrities like Chappell Roan, Emeli Sandé, and Alanis Morissette, who have upcoming performances in Hungary, to use their platform to support basic freedoms and human rights, especially for LGBTQ individuals. The foundation has also targeted other celebrities expected to perform in Hungary in the future, including Katy Perry and Charli XCX.

Since coming into power in 2010, the Fidesz party has enacted several laws restricting LGBTQ rights, including banning LGBTQ topics from daytime television, sex education classes, and access to information for minors. The call for celebrities to boycott Hungary is part of a broader push for international support and solidarity with LGBTQ individuals in the country.
