Flag football for girls is growing in popularity in Idaho

Flag football is gaining popularity, especially among women and girls like Megan and Audrielle, eighth-graders from Boise. They find inspiration in watching other girls play and enjoy the leadership roles they take on as quarterbacks. The Optimist Youth Football clinic in Boise recently hosted over 150 girls aged 7 to 17, double the number from the previous year. The clinic focused on skills like footwork, throwing, catching, and flag pulling techniques, emphasizing the importance of technique in the sport.

Laneah Bryan, a defensive player on the US National Flag Football Team, helped coach the girls at the clinic, many of whom were new to the sport. The girls showed quick improvement and a passion for the game, with Bryan mentioning the excitement of seeing their progress. With the inclusion of flag football in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, the sport is getting even more attention on a global scale.

The participating middle school girls express their enthusiasm for flag football, noting that they are now inspirations for younger girls to start playing. They see the sport as an opportunity for future athletes and are excited about the possibilities it offers. Overall, the increased interest and participation in flag football, particularly among girls, is paving the way for a bright future in the sport.
