Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently held two news conferences with fellow governors in Idaho and Montana, focusing on promoting a Balanced Budget Amendment campaign. DeSantis, along with 26 governors, sent a letter to Congress in support of reducing the national debt and reigning in spending. The proposed amendment would require Congress to balance the budget each year to prevent further growth of the national debt, but would require support from 38 states to ratify.
DeSantis has been vocal about Florida’s fiscal record, touting budget surpluses in recent years through spending cuts and sales tax revenues. He also supports the Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative, aimed at identifying and eliminating bureaucratic waste within government agencies.
Last month, DeSantis announced the creation of a Florida DOGE task force to streamline government operations and cut unnecessary bureaucracy at the state level. Concerns over the growing national debt, which reached $36 trillion last year, have led to calls for increased fiscal responsibility and efficiency in government spending.
The federal DOGE agency, created under the Trump administration, claims to have saved over $115 billion in government costs so far. DeSantis and other governors are pushing for a Balanced Budget Amendment to address the nation’s fiscal challenges and ensure taxpayer dollars are being used efficiently.
