Rapper Soulja Boy, whose real name is DeAndre Cortez Way, was found liable for sexually assaulting, physically and emotionally abusing a former assistant. A jury in Santa Monica, California awarded the woman more than $4 million in damages after a three-week trial. The 34-year-old was found liable for assault, sexual battery, and intentional infliction of emotional distress, but not for false imprisonment. The woman, who was not named in the lawsuit, claimed that Soulja Boy did not pay her despite agreeing to $500 a week for personal tasks. She also alleged that he abused, raped, kicked, punched, and threatened her with violence and death throughout their romantic relationship. Despite being manipulated into staying until 2020, she eventually left but was beaten and raped when she returned to retrieve her belongings. The singer’s defense attorney maintains that the evidence does not support the verdict and plans to pursue post-trial remedies. Soulja Boy, known for his hit single “Crank That (Soulja Boy)” in 2007, is facing implications beyond this case as well.
