Convicted murderer Cesar Hernandez, who escaped custody from California Department of Corrections in December, is now accused of killing a Mexican police commander. The U.S. Embassy and U.S. Marshals Service released a flyer identifying Hernandez as “dangerous” and having violent tendencies. He allegedly killed Mexico Police Commander Abigail Esparza Reyes while law enforcement attempted to apprehend him. The U.S. Marshals Service confirmed the incident and offered a reward of $35,000 for information leading to Hernandez’s arrest.
Hernandez was serving an 80 years to life sentence for first-degree murder in 2019 in Los Angeles County. He had a court appearance for manufacturing a weapon and possessing drugs in prison scheduled on the day he escaped. Video footage showed Hernandez running across a field without restraints after allegedly using a self-made key to break free. Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood stated that Hernandez punched a guard and escaped through an open gate in the courthouse parking lot.
The CDCR confirmed an active investigation related to Hernandez in Tijuana but did not provide additional details. Officials highlighted that those who commit violence against law enforcement officers will be held accountable. The U.S. Marshals Service assisted Reyes before she succumbed to her injuries. Authorities are working to locate and apprehend Hernandez, urging anyone with information to come forward.
