Obama portrait moved in White House after assassination attempt on Trump, replaced with painting of current president

The White House recently moved the official portrait of former President Barack Obama to a new location in the East Room, replacing it with a painting of President Donald Trump raising his fist in the air after an assassination attempt. The new portrait is based on a photo of Trump taken during a campaign event where he was shot at. This image became a symbol of Trump’s bid for a second term.

Former President Joe Biden, who left office in January, does not yet have an official portrait hanging in the traditional spot reserved for the most recent presidents. Trump does not have an official portrait from his first term either, which would typically have been unveiled during his successor’s time in office.

The White House has the authority to move portraits around, as demonstrated by Trump’s relocation of Bill Clinton and George W. Bush portraits during his first term. The recent redecoration also involved moving Obama’s portrait to a different spot and placing Bush’s in the staircase.

Some Republicans, such as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, have expressed enthusiasm for the new decor featuring Trump’s portrait. In addition to this redecoration, Trump also demanded the removal of a painting in the Colorado State House and the disappearance of a portrait of former Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Mark Milley from the Pentagon.
