Idaho State Softball Makes History with Sweep Against University of Montana

Idaho State softball made history on Friday with a doubleheader sweep against the University of Montana, putting them on the doorstep of a conference regular season title. The team’s wins No. 30 and 31 moved them closer to tying a program single-season record. Head coach Andrew Rich also achieved his 100th victory, the second-most in ISU history. Sophomore catcher Jenna Kearns tied a program record with seven RBIs in one game, while junior centerfielder Ava Brown hit three home runs, reaching a total of 20 for the season.

The Bengals won the first game 17-8 and the second game 9-4. Brown’s powerful hitting impressed fans, with one home run clearing the 200-foot fence and landing beyond the families sitting behind it. Kearns, on the other hand, emerged as one of the hottest hitters in the country, with two home runs, including a game-winning grand slam in the first game.

With five games left in the regular season, Brown is now tied with two former players for the most home runs in a season. Coach Rich praised Kearns for her hard work on her offensive production, highlighting her improvement as one of the hottest hitters in the country. The team’s dynamic lineup includes Kearns and second baseman Belle Navarrete, setting up a powerful trio of hitters at the top of the order.

Rich expressed his pride in the team’s achievements and progress over the past four years, aiming to surpass the program’s record of 35 wins in a season set in 2015. The Bengals will continue their quest for more victories in the remaining games of the season, with the goal of reaching new heights and building on the success of past teams.
