In the UK, about 500 steam trains run annually across the country, delighting enthusiasts and confusing commuters with their nostalgic charm. However, the future of main line steam operations may be at risk due to modernization efforts in the rail industry. Network Rail is planning to implement in-cab signalling systems, replacing traditional lineside signals, which could pose a challenge for steam locomotives.
To address this issue, a pioneering project was launched to fit Britain’s first steam locomotive built in 50 years, the “A1” No.60163 Tornado, with European Train Control System (ETCS) technology. The technology, which cost about £9m to implement, was trialled for the first time on the Tornado to ensure its compatibility with steam operations.
ETCS is set to be rolled out across the UK, with some trains already scheduled to run in digital-only mode by the end of the year. The project faced various challenges, including ensuring the technology could withstand the harsh conditions of a steam locomotive environment.
Partners in the project, such as Hitachi Rail UK, emphasized the importance of the initiative in preserving the heritage of steam locomotives on the main line. While initially costly, future fitments are expected to be more affordable, opening up possibilities for more steam trains to be equipped with the necessary technology.
The success of the project with the Tornado will shape the design of future equipment for steam locomotives, ensuring their place on the main line for generations to come.
