Firth High School senior Kynzie Nielson continues to dominate the track and field scene, recently winning the 800 and 3,200-meter races at the DirectCom Invitational. With ambitious goals of setting personal records in the 800, 1,600, and 3,200-meter races, Nielson is determined to leave a lasting legacy at her school before heading off to college at Weber State. At the same meet, Baylee Johnson of Firth excelled in the sprints, winning both the 100 and 200-meter races.
In the boys’ events, standout performances included Jose Torres of American Falls winning the 100 and 200-meter races, while Johnny Walker of Snake River dominated the long jump. North Fremont’s Corbin Johnston and Teton’s Zane Lindquist battled it out in the distance races, with Johnston coming out on top. Hillcrest’s Garrett Cook and Degan Stoor of Soda Springs had a close competition in the hurdles, with Cook ultimately taking the win.
The meet also saw impressive field event performances, with Gavin Schiffmann of Pocatello setting a personal record in the shot put and Malad’s Gabe Hooste winning the javelin. On the girls’ side, Paetyn Polatis of Snake River and Hailee Pool of Pocatello both excelled in the 400-meter race, with Polatis also winning the 1,600-meter race. Marsh Valley’s Lydia Townsend dominated the hurdles, while Butte County’s Cambree Lyon set a personal record in the shot put. Overall, the DirectCom Invitational showcased the talent and determination of local high school track and field athletes.
