Taxidermists Charged in Idaho’s Growing Trophy Poaching Scandal

A high-profile poaching investigation in Idaho has expanded with new charges filed against a father-son taxidermy team from Filer. Tom and Ryan Schiermeier of Schiermeier Taxidermy are facing criminal charges for processing trophy mounts tied to illegally harvested animals without proper documentation. The duo, known for lifelike mounts, is accused of accepting orders for mounts of 43 illegally taken animals and failing to maintain required records. Tom Schiermeier faces eight charges, including two felonies, while Ryan faces one felony and seven misdemeanors. The investigation is part of a broader case involving Karl W. Studer, who is facing 20 charges related to wildlife violations, including disrupting wildlife with a helicopter and reselling illegal tags. Studer allegedly spent over $150,000 on these tags and faces fines, imprisonment, and license suspensions if convicted. Investigators used cellphone data and flight records to support the charges. Studer’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 2025. The Idaho Department of Fish and Game declined to comment on the case. The Schiermeiers are scheduled for preliminary hearings on May 9.
