First openly gay K-pop star to come out is a member of a Korean boyband

During a concert in Los Angeles, Just B member Bain publicly came out as gay, making him the first male K-pop star to do so. This is a rare move in the high-pressure Korean music industry, where artists typically keep their private lives guarded. Bain, 23, received a positive response from the crowd, with cheers and support shown on social media. He referenced Lady Gaga’s song “Born This Way” and waved a rainbow pride flag during his announcement.

Bain’s bandmate Siwoo also expressed support, acknowledging the difficulty of Bain’s decision. Fans have flooded social media with messages of love and support for Bain, praising his courage. Just B, a six-member group, has been active since 2021 and has released several EPs and singles.

Before Bain, Jiae from Wassup and Lara from Katseye had publicly come out as bisexual and queer, respectively. In socially conservative South Korea, where same-sex marriage is not legally recognized, discrimination against LGBT people remains pervasive. Bain’s announcement is seen as a milestone in the K-pop industry, where artists’ behaviors and images are tightly controlled by labels and fans. His openness about his sexuality has sparked conversations about LGBTQ+ representation in the industry and society as a whole.
