An In-Depth Examination of the Interview with Deputy Involved in Fatal Shooting – KMVT

Deputy Scott Stone Reflects on Tragic Shooting That Claimed Fellow Officer’s Life

In a poignant interview, Deputy Scott Stone recounted the harrowing events of February 5, 2018, when an auto theft task force operation turned deadly. The team, comprising El Paso County Sheriff’s deputies, state troopers, and Colorado Springs police officers, attempted to arrest car theft suspect Manuel Zetina. Without warning, Zetina opened fire, resulting in the deaths of Deputy Micah Flick and himself, and injuries to three other officers, including Deputy Stone.

Deputy Stone described the day as starting "like any other," with the team gathering for a briefing and setting out to locate stolen vehicles. Upon encountering Zetina, who was seen walking toward him, Deputy Stone initiated contact. Suddenly, he felt a loss of sensation from his hip down, realizing he had been shot. Despite the injury, he clung to Zetina to prevent further harm. Deputy Flick intervened to assist, but tragically, he was also shot and later died from his injuries.

Reflecting on Deputy Flick’s actions, Stone stated, "I would not be here. I think there would have been a lot more people hurt. I think there would have been a lot more people dead if Micah didn’t do what he did." He emphasized Flick’s selflessness and dedication to ensuring the safety of others.

Despite the traumatic experience, Deputy Stone expressed gratitude for his survival and the birth of his daughter, born two weeks after the incident. He acknowledged the challenges of recovery, noting ongoing issues with his lower back and leg, but remains committed to his role in law enforcement. Stone concluded by highlighting the importance of mutual respect and understanding between law enforcement and the community, advocating for support and appreciation on both sides.
