Fifth Graders Experience American History at Twin Falls Library
TWIN FALLS, Idaho — Fifth graders from Bickel Elementary School recently explored the American Revolution through the “American Revolution Experience” exhibit at the Twin Falls Library, guided by passionate history enthusiast Tom Wangman. A veteran of the Iraq conflict, Wangman engaged students with intriguing questions about American history, such as “Have you ever heard of taxation without representation?”
As students moved through the exhibit, they learned about defining moments in American history, including Paul Revere’s ride and the battles of Lexington and Concord. Wangman demonstrated historic equipment used by Continental Soldiers, including a long land pattern British musket that could fire three rounds a minute and a sharp bayonet, fostering a sense of awe and intimidation about the realities of war.
Wangman emphasized the importance of citizenship, urging students to become active participants in democracy, much like their 18th-century counterparts. Reflecting on his experiences as an intelligence agent in a post-war environment, he explained the historical cycle of tyranny, rebellion, and the need for stability. He shared his admiration for the Founding Fathers and highlighted a pivotal moment depicted in a painting at the Capitol Rotunda: George Washington resigning his commission—a moment he believes broke the historical cycle of conflict, paving the way for a nation dedicated to preserving rights as promised in the Declaration of Independence.
The hands-on nature of the exhibit sparked curiosity among the students about America’s past and reinforced the significance of participating in democracy. Wangman’s compelling stories provided a relevant context for understanding the enduring lessons of the American Revolution, inspiring the next generation to engage deeply in civic life.
