Idaho Conservation League Seeks Volunteers for Wilderness Steward Program
April 28, 2025
The Idaho Conservation League (ICL) is calling for volunteers to join its Wilderness Steward Program, dedicated to preserving and enhancing Idaho’s wilderness areas. This initiative offers outdoor enthusiasts the opportunity to actively contribute to the stewardship of the state’s pristine landscapes.
Program Overview
Established in 2016, the Wilderness Steward Program engages volunteers in independent patrols across Central Idaho’s designated and recommended wilderness areas. Participants are tasked with:
- Naturalizing backcountry campsites
- Clearing illegal fire rings
- Removing waste
- Collecting trail-use data for land management agencies
Additionally, stewards educate fellow recreators on Leave No Trace principles and regional wilderness regulations, ensuring a safe and authentic wilderness experience for all. (idahoconservation.org)
Volunteer Commitment
Volunteers are encouraged to conduct at least four patrols between June and September, with the option to extend their involvement into the fall. While prior experience is beneficial, it is not mandatory. ICL provides training and support to ensure volunteers are well-prepared for their roles. (idahoconservation.org)
Impact and Achievements
Since its inception, the program has made significant contributions to Idaho’s public lands. In 2023, volunteers:
- Engaged with nearly 2,000 trail users
- Removed 40 pounds of trash
- Destroyed or cleaned 71 fire rings
- Collected trail-use data over 762 miles of trails
These efforts have been instrumental in maintaining the integrity of Idaho’s wilderness areas. (idahoconservation.org)
