Judge Upholds Probation for Local Man Who Broke Officer’s Hand; Police Union Claims Sentence is Inappropriate

Idaho Falls Police Union Disappointed by Probation Sentence for Attacker

IDAHO FALLS — The Idaho Falls Fraternal Order of Police has voiced its discontent following the sentencing of Bradley Cory Willard, 36, who received five years of probation after fracturing an officer’s hand during a DUI arrest in August. Initially charged with multiple felonies, Willard plea-bargained down to one assault count and a misdemeanor DUI.

On March 4, Senior District Judge Stephen Dunn suspended a potential five-year prison sentence. The police union criticized this decision, emphasizing Willard’s extensive criminal history and prior probation violations. They labeled the outcome a "serious failure" of the judicial system, arguing it undermines accountability and could endanger public safety.

During the arrest, Officer Peter Hansen was injured when Willard resisted and twisted his hand violently, leading to permanent injury. Hansen expressed his disappointment in the plea deal, emphasizing that leniency would not deter future violent incidents. He described his ongoing struggles, noting he can no longer wear his wedding ring due to the disfigurement.

In courtroom discussions, Judge Dunn stated he wished he could impose harsher penalties but ultimately considered Willard’s progress in treatment. Willard claimed he has remained sober since the incident, expressing remorse for his actions.

The police union urged judicial leaders to reconsider such leniency, underscoring the potential dangers of repeated second chances for offenders like Willard. "Our officers deserve justice," they stated, warning that failure to impose appropriate consequences could lead to further victimization.

Hansen was eventually allowed to deliver his victim impact statement during a subsequent hearing after the initial absence of his personal testimony became a topic of contention.
