Boise State Player Raises Concerns Over Limited Walk-On Opportunities After NCAA Settlement
BOISE STATE, Idaho — Following a significant NCAA settlement that could restrict walk-on opportunities for thousands of college athletes, former Boise State kicker Jonah Dalmas speaks out, emphasizing the need for a second chance in collegiate sports.
Dalmas, an all-time leading scorer for the Broncos, reflects on the importance of hard work and the competitive nature of college athletics. For years, athletes without scholarships could try out as walk-ons, making it possible to showcase their skills and contribute to their teams. Dalmas himself was a walk-on, earning a spot on the roster as a true freshman.
"Being a walk-on is super necessary," he asserted, noting that it allows players to demonstrate their potential. However, current NCAA changes, put on hold by a California judge, threaten this pathway. The settlement includes approximately $2.8 billion to compensate former student-athletes for lost name, image, and likeness rights, while also introducing a capped compensation system for players.
This new structure could limit team rosters, potentially pushing out many aspiring athletes who would typically have the chance to prove themselves as walk-ons. Coach James Cluphf of Eagle High School noted that Boise State has historically relied on walk-ons, highlighting the success of players like Leighton Vander Esch and Matt Paradis, who worked their way up to the NFL through perseverance.
As the collegiate sports landscape evolves, Cluphf warns of the potential for schools to diminish into minor-league systems, altering the dynamics of college athletics. Boise State has declined to comment until the settlement situation resolves.
