Idaho State Park Passport Program Expands Access for Foster Families

BOISE, Idaho — The Idaho State Park Foster Family Passport program is set to enter its second year, continuing to provide foster families with complimentary access to all state parks and special events aimed at enhancing their outdoor experiences. This initiative is a collaborative effort between the Department of Health and Welfare (DHW), the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation (IDPR), Regence BlueShield of Idaho, and Idaho Business for the Outdoors (IBO).

Kicking off this weekend, the program will launch with the "Fostering Family Adventures" event at Bruneau Dunes State Park. Families will be treated to a planetarium show at the Bruneau Dunes Observatory, gain insights into camping skills, and explore the park’s impressive 470-foot dune.

IDPR Director Susan Buxton emphasized the importance of inclusivity and community, stating, "Our mission includes fostering experiences that renew the human spirit and bring communities together. Providing extra support for foster families demonstrates that we are all part of Idaho’s family—our state parks are a home for everyone."

Laura Denner, DHW Family and Community Partnerships Administrator, expressed her excitement for the program, noting, "We’re thrilled to host a day where Idaho’s foster families can relax, connect, and enjoy something special together. Events like this serve as a small token of gratitude and help families thrive."

The continuation of the passport program follows the recent signing of Senate Bill 1028 by Governor Brad Little, which allocates $23 million to bolster resources for the DHW’s child welfare division, aimed at promoting family unity and supporting those entering foster care.
