Boise Airport Launches Sunflower Lanyard Program for Travelers with Hidden Disabilities
BOISE, Idaho — In a significant move to enhance travel experiences for individuals with unseen disabilities, Boise Airport has introduced the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program. This initiative enables travelers to discreetly signal airport staff that they may require additional assistance.
Heather Zeitlin, representing the City of Boise, explained the purpose of the program: “While there are noticeable disabilities, many remain non-apparent.” This initiative aims to provide extra support to these travelers without requiring them to disclose personal information about their disabilities. The program has already received over 600 requests for sunflower lanyards, both via mail and in person.
The lanyard serves as a simple yet effective tool for those traveling through Boise and participating airports across the nation. Nearly half the airports accessible from Boise are also part of the program, allowing staff to be better prepared to assist individuals displaying the sunflower symbol. "We do not ask what their disability is; that’s personal," added Zeitlin, emphasizing the importance of privacy and individual needs.
Advocates from organizations like the Epilepsy Foundation of Idaho have praised the initiative. Heidi McAdams highlighted how the program could alleviate travel-related stress for individuals living with epilepsy, as stress can trigger seizures. The lanyard allows users to note essential information, like emergency contacts or specific assistance required, ensuring that airport staff can provide timely help.
Those interested in obtaining a sunflower lanyard can visit the Boise Airport’s administration office on the third floor, Boise City Hall, or request one by mail. This thoughtful program promises to make air travel more accessible and comfortable for Idahoans with hidden disabilities.
