Trump Declines to Intervene in Deportation Case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia
In a recent interview with ABC News, President Donald Trump revealed that he could reach out to El Salvador’s president to facilitate the release of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a man mistakenly deported by his administration, but opted not to do so. "I’m not the one making this decision. We have lawyers that don’t want to do this," Trump stated, emphasizing that legal counsel discourages action.
This decision comes in light of a Supreme Court ruling that mandates the government to assist in Abrego Garcia’s return. He was deported in March after being subjected to what the government described as an administrative error. When questioned about his reluctance to intervene, Trump labeled Abrego Garcia a gang member, saying, "If he were the gentleman you say he was, I would do that, but he’s not."
Abrego Garcia, originally from El Salvador, had been residing in Maryland with his wife and three children prior to his deportation. He was under a court order that restricted his removal due to credible fears of harm upon returning to El Salvador. His deportation led to his initial transfer to a high-security facility known as the Terrorism Confinement Center, an experience described as traumatizing.
U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen, who recently visited El Salvador, reported that Abrego Garcia has since been moved to a different prison in Santa Ana. Abrego Garcia’s plight highlights ongoing concerns regarding the treatment of deportees and the complexities surrounding U.S. immigration policies.
