Wärtsilä Launches Innovative NextDF Technology for Enhanced Environmental Performance in Marine Engines
Wärtsilä has unveiled its NextDF technology with the introduction of the Wärtsilä 46TS-DF dual-fuel engine. This advanced engine is designed to operate with liquefied natural gas (LNG), achieving methane emissions below 1.4% of fuel use, with potential reductions to as low as 1.1% across varying load conditions. This achievement significantly surpasses the standard methane slip factor of 3.1% outlined in the FuelEU Maritime and IMO Lifecycle Guidelines, marking a substantial step forward in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the maritime industry.
In light of growing environmental concerns, LNG is recognized as a crucial transition fuel within the shipping sector. Many shipping companies are turning to LNG to mitigate their overall carbon footprint. While methane, the primary component of LNG, can escape during combustion, this new engine aims to minimize that risk, enhancing compliance with stringent decarbonization targets set by international legislation.
Stefan Nysjö, Vice President of Power Supply at Wärtsilä Marine, states, “NextDF technology reduces the environmental impact of LNG-fueled vessels without compromising performance, supporting ship owners in meeting decarbonization objectives."
The Wärtsilä 46TS-DF engine, equipped with two-stage turbocharging, offers exceptional efficiency and power density, making it adaptable for various maritime applications. It’s also retrofittable for future sustainable fuels as they become available. The engine’s first installation is set for the cruise ship MSC World Asia, currently under construction in France for MSC Cruises.
As Wärtsilä continues to pioneer solutions for cleaner shipping, the introduction of NextDF technology not only reflects its commitment to sustainability but also positions the Wärtsilä 46TS-DF as a leading engine in the quest for lower emissions in maritime operations.
