India Implements Social Media Restrictions on Pakistani Celebrities Following Terror Attack
In the wake of a tragic terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that resulted in 26 fatalities, India has intensified its diplomatic and digital strategies against Pakistan. As of April 30, Instagram profiles of several popular Pakistani celebrities, including actresses Hania Aamir and Mahira Khan, have been blocked for users in India. This move aligns with the Indian government’s heightened restrictions on content deemed provocative amidst rising tensions.
The ban extends beyond Instagram, with the government recently prohibiting 16 Pakistani YouTube channels, including significant news outlets like Dawn News and Geo News. This action was taken following recommendations from the Ministry of Home Affairs due to concerns about the circulation of "provocative and communally sensitive content" subsequent to the Pahalgam incident.
In addition to Aamir and Khan, other Pakistani stars such as Ali Zafar, Sanam Saeed, and Imran Abbas have also had their social media access restricted in India. However, not all Pakistani celebrities face similar consequences. Fawad Khan and Atif Aslam, for example, remain accessible on Instagram, with Khan’s Bollywood comeback film, Abir Gulaal, recently canceled, reflecting ongoing tensions.
This tightening of social media access is part of a broader series of measures enacted by India, including suspending the Indus Water Treaty and revoking visas for Pakistani citizens residing in India. As the government continues to evaluate its approach toward digital platforms and high-profile figures, the future of these celebrity accounts remains uncertain.
