Oh, Cherished Waters! Discoveries at the Camas National Wildlife Refuge

Camas National Wildlife Refuge Thrives After Water Surge

Camas National Wildlife Refuge is experiencing a resurgence of wildlife activity this season, thanks to ample water resources. Ninety-something widower Ron Dennis noted, “After two years of no water, the birds are sure enjoying some full ponds.” This year, the refuge is alive with a variety of avian species, drawing birdwatchers and photographers alike.

Local wildlife enthusiast Bill Schiess recently spent an evening at the refuge and captured stunning photographs of 64 bird species in just over four hours. Among his notable sights was a female Sandhill crane nesting in the Big Pond. The evening was especially memorable as Schiess witnessed a pair of Eared grebes performing their mating dance—a unique experience for him despite the species’ local commonality.

The early hours of the day yielded little excitement until sunset prompted a flurry of activity. Birds flooded to the west side of Big Pond, where shallow pools had formed. Schiess observed Western meadowlarks, Long-billed curlews, and various gulls gathering for a drink. A flock of about 30 Black-necked stilts, along with 11 American avocets, performed acrobatics before landing on the water’s surface, while tiny Wilson’s phalaropes foraged for insects.

The well-fed waters of Camas have also positively impacted Toomey Pond, which is overflowing into adjacent areas. In contrast, Market Lake Wildlife Management Area is suffering from a water shortage due to a shift from flooding to sprinkler irrigation, leading to decreased bird activity there.

As spring approaches, visitors can expect vibrant wildlife experiences at Camas National Wildlife Refuge, a stark contrast to other local areas struggling with water availability. With an emphasis on outdoor enjoyment, authorities also announced that fishing at Henrys Lake will soon open for catch-and-release.
