An elderly cat was discovered alive after surviving a nearly 400-foot fall at Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah, which tragically resulted in the deaths of her owners, Matthew Nannen, 45, and Bailee Crane, 58. Their bodies were located on April 29, around 380 feet below Inspiration Point, where authorities believe they fell either on April 28 or 29. The couple had been living out of a U-Haul truck, having traveled from Arizona, with their last known address in Florida.
The cat, now named Mirage, was found in a soft-sided carrier that was muddy and dirty. When she arrived at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, she exhibited signs of distress, including being sore and matted, and had fractured ribs. However, with proper care and attention from the veterinary team, Mirage is expected to recover fully. The sanctuary reported that she is eating and drinking on her own, showing positive signs of improvement.
Judah Battista, chief sanctuary officer at Best Friends, described it as “remarkable” that the cat survived such a perilous fall. He emphasized her sweet nature and noted that she is doing very well under their care. Mirage’s survival amid such tragic circumstances highlights a glimmer of hope, reflecting resilience and the importance of animal welfare during challenging situations.
