Cuban Entrepreneur Celebrates 1,000th Cruise Voyage, Lives Life at Sea
Cuban-born entrepreneur Mario Salcedo, affectionately known as "Super Mario," has made waves in the cruising community, recently celebrating his 1,000th voyage with Royal Caribbean. Living on cruise ships for the past 25 years, Salcedo spends an impressive $101,000 annually on his oceanic lifestyle, financing it through his work in investment management.
Salcedo’s journey began in 1997 when he took his first cruise and was instantly captivated. This lifestyle allows him to escape the grind of the corporate world, trading in suits and lengthy flights for a life of leisure at sea. “It’s stress-free… the best lifestyle,” he states, emphasizing his preference for the relaxed atmosphere onboard.
His milestone voyage departed from Miami on January 5 aboard the 3,286-passenger Explore of the Seas, taking him on an 11-night adventure to Panama and the southern Caribbean. Having lived primarily on Royal Caribbean ships since 2000—with only short stints on land, including a 15-month hiatus during the pandemic—Salcedo’s unique lifestyle has come with unexpected challenges. He has developed "mal de débarquement syndrome," a rare condition that affects balance and creates a persistent sensation of motion even while on solid ground. “I wobble so much that I can’t walk properly when getting off,” he admits.
Despite the physical challenges, Salcedo views this condition as a minor trade-off for a lifestyle that brings him joy and fulfillment. His story highlights the adaptability of those who embrace unconventional lifestyles, proving that comfort and happiness can often be found in the most unexpected places.
