TeleMessage Halts Services Following Hackers’ Claim of App Breach

TeleMessage, an app reportedly used by former national security adviser Mike Waltz, has suspended its services following claims of a security breach by hackers. A spokesperson for Smarsh, the parent company, confirmed they are investigating the incident and have enlisted an external cybersecurity firm for support. As a precaution, all TeleMessage services have been temporarily halted.

The app, which employs encryption similar to that of Signal, is designed for compliance purposes, allowing government agencies and businesses to back up chat records. Waltz’s use of TeleMessage during a Cabinet meeting sparked renewed concerns about the security of communication methods, especially following the “Signalgate” controversy when he unintentionally invited a journalist into a sensitive Signal chat.

While Signal is recognized for its robust encryption, the security protocols of TeleMessage remain less transparent. Government regulations typically require officials to use secure intranet systems for transmitting sensitive information to prevent breaches via compromised devices. Reports indicate that agencies including the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Health and Human Services utilize TeleMessage’s services.

On Sunday, a hacker claimed to have breached TeleMessage’s servers and obtained a vast array of files. They provided evidence, including a screenshot of Coinbase employees, confirming the authenticity of the data but clarifying that Coinbase had not been hacked and customer data was safe. The hacker stated they have not thoroughly reviewed all extracted files, leaving uncertainty about whether sensitive U.S. government communications were included.

Additionally, another hacker claimed to have accessed TeleMessage and provided similar evidence, though specific details on the extent of the breach remain unclear.
