Twin Falls Takes Proactive Steps to Address Clogged Drains
TWIN FALLS, Idaho — The city of Twin Falls is launching a new initiative to combat the top insurance claim affecting residents: clogged drains, primarily caused by fats, oils, and greases (FOG). At a recent city council meeting, Erin Steel, Assistant Public Works Director, unveiled a two-phase plan aimed at educating the community and enhancing enforcement around this critical issue.
"Many residents inadvertently introduce FOG into the plumbing system by rinsing cooking utensils," Steel explained. "Once these substances cool and solidify, they can cause significant blockages and overflows in the pipes."
The first phase of the plan centers on a media campaign designed to raise awareness about the FOG problem. Steel emphasized that effective communication with the community will play a vital role in reducing the amount of FOG entering the drainage system.
The second phase will address enforcement measures, which Steel noted require further definition. Key questions include the nature and timeline for compliance and the establishment of city-specific standards. Steel pointed out that Old Town is particularly at risk, with its aging infrastructure compounded by increased FOG-related clogs. "With 2 inches of FOG in a 4-inch line, the flow can reduce drastically, complicating the drainage process," he remarked.
Following Steel’s presentation, the city council authorized the Public Works department to initiate the first phase of this outreach effort, promising a concerted push for community engagement in the coming weeks.
The initiative reflects Twin Falls’ commitment to addressing ongoing environmental challenges and maintaining the city’s infrastructure, ensuring a healthier and more efficient waste management system for all residents.
