Grizzly Cub Found Dead in Grand Teton National Park
GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK – Tragedy struck in Grand Teton as wildlife officials reported the death of Grizzly 1058, one of Grizzly 399’s cubs, on Tuesday. The 5-year-old male bear was discovered near U.S. Highway 26, approximately 125 yards from the roadway. Initial investigations suggest he was struck by a vehicle, though it remains unclear when the incident occurred; it is possible he had been deceased for several days.
Authorities recovered the bear’s remains, noting he appeared to be in good condition for his age and the season. His body has since been returned to the landscape of the national park. This incident marks the second loss of Grizzly 399’s cubs to human-related causes, and tragically, it is the third of her 18 offspring to be killed in vehicle collisions. Previously, another cub, Grizzly 1057, was euthanized in 2022 after seeking food in a nearby neighborhood, while Grizzly 399 herself was killed in a vehicle collision last October.
Grizzly 1058 had been sighted occasionally in the park since his weaning in 2022, but no confirmed observations had been reported this spring. Park officials are urging drivers in the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem to remain vigilant, as wildlife often grazes near roads and can be difficult to spot. They recommend adhering to speed limits and maintaining safe distances from other vehicles. In case of wildlife-vehicle collisions, the public is urged to report incidents to the Teton Interagency Dispatch Center at (307) 739-3301.
