Idaho Falls Track & Field District Championships Showcase Top Talent

IDAHO FALLS – This past weekend, Ravsten Stadium buzzed with excitement as the elite athletes from the area’s 6A and 5A schools competed for their chance to participate in next week’s Track & Field state championships. The combined 6A District 4-5-6 and 5A District 6 meet highlighted standout performances, including Highland’s Spencer Van Orden, who set state-best times in both 6A hurdle races.

Skyline’s Zyan Crockett, despite not hitting personal bests, claimed victory in the 100 and 200 meters, aided by teammate Will Hardy. The Skyline boys team dominated the 5A competition, scoring 173.5 points, while Idaho Falls emerged victorious in the girls division with 157.5 points.

Among notable performances, Highland’s girls team triumphed in the 6A category with 117 points. Idaho Falls’ Jaycee Jensen exhibited versatility, clinching wins in the 5A 400, 1,600, and 3,200 meters, establishing herself as a formidable contender in distance events. Hillcrest’s Garrett Cook also shone in the 5A hurdles, securing personal records that place him among the state leaders.

The field events saw impressive feats, including Blackfoot’s Owen Gregory completing the 5A 800 meters in under two minutes and Rigby’s Brayden Maughan excelling in shot put and discus. The javelin event was noteworthy, with personal bests recorded by Blackfoot’s Rawley Tapia and Kacen McGarry.

In the girls’ division, standout performances included Hallie Burton of Idaho Falls and Thunder Ridge freshman Abigail Sondag, both achieving remarkable sprint times. Rigby’s Bailey Clements proved her prowess in shot and discus events, ranking high in the state.

As athletes prepare for the state meet, the weekend’s events foreshadow what promises to be a thrilling championship showcasing Idaho’s best.
