Caldwell School District Evaluates the Establishment of a District-Led Police Force

Caldwell School District Considers Establishing Own Police Force Amid Safety Concerns

CALDWELL, Idaho — In response to pressing safety issues, the Caldwell School District is evaluating the possibility of creating its own police force following the absence of school resource officers (SROs) this academic year. After a failed levy in May led to the reduction of SROs, the district has partnered with the private security firm Eagle Eye.

District spokesperson Jessica Watts explained that this new initiative would provide police officers with law enforcement capabilities, unlike the current security personnel. The move comes after the inconsistency of SRO presence, as their obligations to community calls and training often left campuses underprotected.

"As we explore new enforcement options, having dedicated officers would ensure a more consistent law enforcement presence in our schools," Watts stated. The district’s director of student safety has been tasked with investigating the feasibility of establishing a police force similar to those already in place in states like Texas and Florida. Challenges such as funding and logistics will be pivotal factors in this decision.

The Caldwell Police Department supports the district’s initiative, emphasizing the shared goal of ensuring the safety of local children. "Our priority has always been the safety of Caldwell’s children, and we support efforts that further that goal," a spokesperson stated.

Looking ahead, the Caldwell School District anticipates the arrival of two school resource officers this fall, thanks to a recently passed levy and a state grant. The board is hopeful that this will enhance student safety and provide a greater sense of security for families and staff.

The discussion of systemic changes in security protocols showcases the district’s commitment to improving school safety and addressing community concerns.
