Idaho Falls Commemorates 33 Years as a Tree City USA with Arbor Day Tree Planting Event

Idaho Falls Celebrates Arbor Day with Tree Planting Event and 33rd Tree City USA Award

IDAHO FALLS – The city of Idaho Falls celebrated Arbor Day on May 9 by planting 17 trees in Heritage Park, with the help of local school students, Mayor Rebecca Casper, City Council members, and Idaho Falls Parks & Recreation staff. This initiative not only fosters environmental education but also enhances the city’s green spaces.

During the celebration, former Mayor Linda Milam joined Mayor Casper to unveil a new swing in Heritage Park, dedicated to the past mayors of Idaho Falls. This swing stands as a tribute to the leadership that has influenced the city’s parks and community development.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of the prestigious Tree City USA Award from the Arbor Day Foundation, marking Idaho Falls as a recipient for the 33rd consecutive year. This award acknowledges communities that show a solid commitment to urban forest management.

Mayor Casper emphasized the significance of this recognition, stating, "To be recognized for 33 years as a Tree City USA community is a testament to Idaho Falls’ dedication to environmental stewardship. We’re proud to involve our students in this tradition, helping them learn the value of trees and the importance of preserving our natural environment."

The Tree City USA program honors cities that meet four essential standards: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending a minimum of $2 per capita on urban forestry, and celebrating an annual Arbor Day.

Idaho Falls adjusts its Arbor Day celebration to May to ensure optimal planting conditions for young trees, given the local climate.
