Federal agents were actively investigating New York City Mayor Eric Adams, seizing phones and pursuing search warrants, just days before the Justice Department directed prosecutors to drop a corruption case against him. Documents recently unsealed reveal that the inquiry, which began in August 2021 when Adams was still Brooklyn borough president, looked into allegations of improper campaign contributions.
Adams has suggested that the investigation was politically motivated, particularly after he criticized Joe Biden’s immigration policies as mayor. The scrutiny escalated publicly in November 2023 when FBI agents seized his devices, leading to charges of accepting illegal contributions and benefits from individuals seeking to influence him, including a Turkish diplomat.
However, on February 10, following Trump’s election, the new Justice Department leadership instructed New York prosecutors to dismiss the charges, claiming they were obstructing Adams’ work in immigration enforcement. This directive prompted resignations from several prosecutors in Manhattan, including the chief federal prosecutor, Danielle Sassoon, who later indicated that they were close to filing additional obstruction charges against Adams.
Despite the cessation of the case, investigations continued until a judge mandated dismissal at the request of the Justice Department. The unsealed documents reveal extensive probing efforts, including recent warrants for Adams’ partner’s property to retrieve information related to a potential admission influence at a public school.
Following the dismissal of the case, Adams views it as vindication but still contends with a precarious political future. He recently announced plans to skip the Democratic primary and run as an independent in November, even as he maintains a cooperative rapport with Trump.
