Alabama Bakeries Sweeten the Gluten-Free Experience
In response to the growing awareness of gluten intolerance and allergies, the gluten-free market is thriving, making it easier for individuals to enjoy delicious treats without worry. Two Alabama bakeries are making significant strides in this movement, providing a range of gluten-free options.
Mason Dixon Bakery in Huntsville, located at 415 Church St. NW, was founded by Ashley Ramirez in 2013 after she faced job delays and sought to address her own celiac disease. Combining her chemistry background with baking, she launched the first gluten-free bakery in Huntsville. Under the guidance of CEO Rachel Bryers, the bakery has become known for its commitment to quality, using natural ingredients like beets and spirulina instead of artificial dyes. With a menu offering everything from buttermilk biscuits to cupcakes, Mason Dixon bakes nearly 1,000 biscuits weekly, catering to both gluten-free and allergen-sensitive customers.
Guncles, located at 1252 Government St. in Mobile, also emerged from a personal journey. After experiencing a wheat allergy, John Edward McGee and his husband, Demetrius James, turned their home baking into a thriving business known for nostalgic, family favorite recipes. Guncles offers an array of treats, from indulgent bundt cakes to savory cheddar biscuits. With a growing fan base, the bakery has expanded its reach with regional distribution and nationwide shipping. However, customers are advised to act quickly, as popular items often sell out fast.
Both Mason Dixon Bakery and Guncles exemplify how Alabama is becoming a beacon for gluten-free options, ensuring that everyone can indulge in delightful treats.
