Listeria Outbreak Sends at Least 10 to Hospitals in California and Nevada

At least ten people have been hospitalized in California and Nevada due to a listeria outbreak currently under investigation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The outbreak is linked to ready-to-eat foods produced by Fresh & Ready Foods LLC, which is based in San Fernando, California. The company has voluntarily recalled over 80 products, including snack boxes, sandwiches, and pastas, with best-by dates between April 22 and May 19. These products were distributed across Arizona, California, Nevada, and Washington in various settings, such as hospitals, hotels, corporate offices, convenience stores, airports, and airlines.

The FDA and CDC began investigating this outbreak in 2024 but initially lacked sufficient evidence to pinpoint a source. The investigation was revived in April 2025 when listeria was found in environmental samples from Fresh & Ready Foods during routine inspections. Whole genome sequencing confirmed that the strain of listeria linked to the outbreak matched that found at the facility.

In response, Fresh & Ready Foods has implemented immediate corrective actions, including the removal of certain equipment, to enhance food safety and comply with FDA guidelines. Among the ten reported illnesses, eight hospitalizations occurred in California and two in Nevada. Symptoms of listeriosis can manifest within two weeks of consuming contaminated food but can take up to ten weeks to appear.

The FDA advises retailers and consumers to clean and sanitize areas that may have come into contact with the recalled products, as listeria can easily spread. At-risk populations—including pregnant women, newborns, seniors, and individuals with weakened immune systems—should seek medical advice if symptoms such as fever, nausea, muscle aches, vomiting, or diarrhea develop.
