Putin Affirms Russia’s Commitment to Resume Talks with Kyiv, Proposes May 15 Start Date

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Sunday that Russia is ready to resume direct negotiations with Ukraine to end the ongoing war, proposing that talks begin on May 15 in Turkey. He plans to discuss this with Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Putin stated there will be no preconditions from Russia’s side, emphasizing a desire for serious negotiations aimed at achieving lasting peace. His comments coincided with the final day of a three-day ceasefire declared by Russia.

Meanwhile, leaders from the UK, France, Poland, and Germany issued a warning to Russia, threatening to increase sanctions unless it accepts an unconditional 30-day ceasefire starting Monday. During a joint news briefing, these leaders expressed strong support for Ukraine, which was mirrored by U.S. President Donald Trump’s backing for the ceasefire effort.

This proposed ceasefire aims to halt all military activities, providing an opportunity for peace talks to address over three years of conflict. Retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, Trump’s special envoy, highlighted that such a ceasefire could initiate discussions to end what has become the largest and longest war in Europe since World War II.

Putin has previously insisted that Ukraine must withdraw from four territories he claims to have annexed illegally and must also promise not to join NATO, limit its military size, and protect Russian cultural interests. Despite indicating a willingness for dialogue, Putin has also declared that Russia has the means to pursue the war to its conclusion, while expressing hope to avoid nuclear escalation.
