Young Owls are Fledging from Their Nests

Springtime Owl Sightings Flourish in Rexburg

Rexburg, ID – Wildlife enthusiasts are in for a treat this spring as various owl species thrive in the area, particularly along the Teton River. A recent excursion into a willow thicket yielded an enchanting encounter with an adult Northern saw-whet owl gracefully watching over its owlets. Nestled about 30 feet away, the owlet sat still, revealing the nurturing dynamic typical of saw-whet families.

Since 2020, local bird watchers have helped establish nesting sites near the South Fork of the Teton River, leading to successful broods this season. Female saw-whets engage in a solitary nesting routine while male partners supply nourishment. After about 18 days, once the owlets are old enough, the female moves on, leaving the male to take over parenting duties. However, unlike the females, males neglect nest cleanliness, leading to a telltale odor that can guide curious observers to their location.

Not to be overshadowed, Long-eared and Great-horned owls are also successfully raising their young this spring. Observers have documented two Long-eared nests, with one yielding five owlets and the other four. Seven Great-horned owl nests have produced between three to five owlets each, with diligent parents working tirelessly to provide food.

As spring flourishes, bird-watchers are encouraged to appreciate these raptors from a safe distance to avoid endangering the young owlets. The presence of numerous colorful birds, including black-chinned hummingbirds and Lazuli buntings, adds to the vibrant avian tapestry in the region.

With the arrival of these magnificent creatures, locals are reminded to respect their habitats while enjoying the beauty of spring in Rexburg. Happy birdwatching!
