Rigby Trojans Sweep Pole Vault at District Championships
RIGBY, ID — In an outstanding display of athleticism, Rigby High School’s pole vaulters soared above the competition at the recent 6A and 5A combined District 4-5-6 track and field meet. This week’s Athletes of the Week are the dynamic quartet of Gracie West, Lizzy Poston, Kaylei Kelley, and Garrett Merwin, all showcasing exceptional talent.
Freshman Gracie West led the charge by clinching the girls’ 6A district title, clearing an impressive height of 12-0. She was closely followed by junior Lizzy Poston, who secured second place with a leap of 11-6, and sophomore Kaylei Kelley, who added to the success by clearing 11-0. Their remarkable performances not only earned them spots at the upcoming state championships but also contributed crucial points that helped the Trojan girls finish second overall in the team standings.
Coach Jared Scott praised the athletes’ hard work and teamwork, noting that West’s 12-0 vault stands as the highest mark in the state this year. With competition expected to be fierce at the state level, the girls will need to push their limits, as previous performances indicate that the gold medal winner may need to exceed 12-0.
In addition to the girls’ triumphs, senior Garrett Merwin shone brightly, setting a new school record in the pole vault with a remarkable 15-5 at the district meet. Merwin will also be aiming for a podium finish at the state meet.
The Rigby Trojans’ pole vaulting team is poised for success, and all eyes will be on them as they take flight at the state championships.
