Skyline Star Shay Shippen Signs with Columbia University
IDAHO FALLS – Skyline High School’s Shay Shippen, renowned as the top scorer in Idaho state basketball history, officially signed her letter of intent to play at Columbia University on Monday night. Celebrated for her exceptional talent, Shippen has recently been recognized as Idaho’s Gatorade Player of the Year and has amassed a trove of accolades throughout her stellar four-year career, including four first-team All-State selections.
During her senior season, Shippen showcased her dominance on the court, averaging 23.6 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 3.2 steals per game. A key contributor to the Grizzlies’ success, she led her team to the state tournament and played a pivotal role in their runner-up finish as a freshman.
The highlight of Shippen’s career came this February when she broke the state scoring record during a district tournament game against Blackfoot, finishing her high school tenure with an impressive total of 2,372 points. She had committed to Columbia in September after considering over 30 offers from various colleges across the nation. Shippen expressed her certainty in her choice, stating, “I just knew Columbia was the one and I didn’t want to waste anyone’s time or mine.”
Columbia first reached out to her in her freshman year, and after an official visit to the New York campus last February, she felt it was the right fit. "It’s a little overwhelming … I felt like all this weight has been lifted off my shoulders,” she shared.
As Shippen embarks on this exciting next chapter, her journey symbolizes hard work, determination, and the pursuit of excellence in athletics. For more updates on local sports and community events, visit eastidahonews.com.
