Rigby Trojans Soar on New Field, Earning Victories Against Rivals
RIGBY — The Rigby Trojans celebrated the opening of their new baseball field with a triumphant 5-2 win over their rivals, the Madison Bobcats, last week. The Trojans followed this success, improving to 2-0 on their new turf with a solid 4-1 victory against the Century Diamondbacks on Saturday.
In the game against Century, despite managing just five hits, Rigby demonstrated resilience by capitalizing on defensive errors and walks. Starting pitcher Zack Gray turned in an impressive performance, surrendering only one hit over five innings while striking out six batters. "Zack was a dawg," said Head Coach Sam Phillips, highlighting Gray’s ability to throw strikes and control the game. Phillips noted that, despite considering sending Gray back on the mound for the sixth inning, he opted to safeguard his arm with a long season ahead.
While Rigby managed to score four runs, they squandered multiple scoring opportunities, leaving 12 runners stranded. Coach Phillips expressed concerns about their situational hitting as the team prepares for conference play, stating, "We need to do a better job hitting the ball, especially with runners in scoring position."
Quinn Bennett led the offense with two RBIs, and Gunnar Davis contributed significantly with two doubles. For the Diamondbacks, Jaxton Humphries managed to score their lone run with a fielder’s choice.
The newly constructed turf field has positively impacted Rigby’s gameplay, eliminating the previous field’s inconsistent bad hops. Phillips remarked on the benefits of the improved playing surface, emphasizing how it ultimately supports the team’s development. "This year was the first time we could hold tryouts on the field," he said, underscoring the project’s importance.
