George Wendt, Iconic Actor from "Cheers," Dies at 76

NEW YORK (AP) — George Wendt, best known for portraying Norm Peterson, the lovable barfly on the iconic 1980s television sitcom "Cheers," has passed away at the age of 76. Wendt died peacefully in his sleep at home early Tuesday morning, as confirmed by his family and The Agency Group.

Wendt’s family described him as a devoted family man and a cherished friend, stating, “He will be missed forever.” They have requested privacy during this time of mourning.

Despite a diverse acting career that spanned television, film, and stage, Wendt’s legacy is firmly tied to the character of Norm, whose witty banter and warm presence made him a cornerstone of "Cheers." The show, set in a Boston bar, featured a talented ensemble that included Ted Danson and Rhea Perlman, and it earned numerous accolades, including 28 Emmy Awards.

Wendt’s journey to landing the role of Norm began with low expectations; he initially auditioned for a much smaller part, just a line that involved the word "beer." However, after impressing the creators, he became a fan favorite, welcomed with enthusiastic shouts of "Norm!" during each episode.

In addition to his television work, Wendt had a successful stage career. He starred in Broadway productions such as "Hairspray," "Art," and "Elf," showcasing his comedic talent in various roles. Wendt was also known for his love of beer, co-authoring the book "Drinking With George," a blend of autobiography and humor focused on the subject.

Survived by his wife Bernadette Birkett, their children, and stepchildren, Wendt leaves behind a legacy that celebrates the power of comedy to create beloved characters that resonate with audiences. National Comedy Center Executive Director Journey Gunderson remarked on Wendt’s ability to evoke warmth and humor in his performances, solidifying his place in television history.
