Idaho Swimming and Diving Celebrates Successful Season with Annual Awards Night
Moscow, Idaho – The Idaho swimming and diving team recently held its annual awards ceremony, commemorating a remarkable season under the leadership of head coach Dr. Mark Sowa and diving coach Wei Wei. This year’s gathering was special, highlighting the team’s outstanding achievements, including a commendable 24-25 record and impressive performances at the WAC Championships.
Five prestigious awards were distributed to recognize the athletes’ exceptional contributions. Sophomore Ginger Kiefer received the Swimmer of the Year award, solidifying her status among the legends of Vandal Swim and Dive. Kiefer rewrote the school record books in the 200-yard IM, achieving times of 1:58.84 in the prelims and 1:58.35 in the finals, and secured titles in the 400-yard IM and 200-yard backstroke. Her impressive season also led her to compete at the USA Open Water Nationals.
The Diver of the Year accolade went to sophomore Lauren Wierschke, who excelled in her second season, achieving personal bests across multiple events, including a 170.70 in the 10M diving at the WAC Championships.
Sophomore Katy Foley was awarded Most Improved after achieving five personal records during the season, notably at the WAC Championships. Freshman Holly Lenarz, recognized as the Rookie of the Year, made her mark by breaking into the top ten in four events in Vandal history.
Lastly, senior Taylor Wassel was named the Vandal Comeback Swimmer of the Year, capping off her career with multiple personal bests at the WAC Championships.
