Historic Memorial Day Travel Begins

Record Number of Travelers Expected for Memorial Day Weekend

BOISE, ID – As Memorial Day weekend approaches, AAA Idaho anticipates a historic surge in travel, with 45.1 million Americans, including 274,000 from Idaho, expected to hit the roads and take to the skies. Travelers should prepare for substantial crowds both on highways and at airports. AAA projects it will respond to about 360,000 emergency road service requests nationwide during the holiday.

“The key to a smooth travel experience is preparation,” advises Matthew Conde, AAA Idaho’s public affairs director. He suggests that even a brief vehicle check—focusing on tire pressure and engine fluids—can greatly enhance safety. Travelers are encouraged to get an early start to minimize time spent in traffic.

Idahoans can take comfort in favorable gas prices, currently averaging $3.32 per gallon, a slight increase from last week, yet significantly lower than a year ago. Nationally, the average stands at around $3.20 per gallon, remaining stable over the past month.

AAA recommends packing essential items such as snacks, water, and necessary documents and medications. For road trips, reducing your speed by 5 to 10 MPH can improve fuel efficiency, extending travel time before refueling. The AAA mobile app is a valuable tool for locating gas stations and EV charging points along routes.

Travelers should share their itineraries with loved ones and remain with their vehicle in case of a breakdown, making sure to alert other drivers with flares or reflectors. Planning rest breaks and sightseeing can alleviate stress, ensuring a safer journey. Remember, wearing seat belts is crucial for everyone in the vehicle.

This Memorial Day, being well-prepared can make all the difference in enjoying the holiday.
