Authorities recaptured Louisiana inmate Tra’Von Johnson, 22, on Friday after he escaped from Tangipahoa Parish Jail the previous afternoon. Johnson was found on Bennett Road in Amite City, a few miles from the jail. This was the second time he had escaped, with the first occurring a year ago. Prior to his escape, Johnson was awaiting trial for involvement in a 2022 home invasion that resulted in a man’s death and a child’s injury. Following his recapture, he was charged with simple escape and taken to Angola, Louisiana, for trial.
The escape was facilitated by an incident where an inmate flooded a shower, leading to several doors being inadvertently left open during cleanup. Johnson escaped through these doors with the assistance of fellow inmate Trevon Wallace, who boosted him over a perimeter fence before returning to the jail, where he was soon apprehended. The sheriff’s office noted that deputies failed to report the incident of the open door or conduct an accurate headcount after securing Wallace.
The search for Johnson began around 10 p.m. when a member of the public alerted authorities about his escape, resulting in a jail lockdown and efforts that lasted until early Friday morning. The sheriff’s office concluded that the escape appeared to be opportunistic rather than premeditated, stemming from staff protocol failures. In response, four jail staff members were placed on administrative leave as the investigation continues, with concerns raised about the facility’s staffing and operational deficiencies. Wallace has been charged with aiding Johnson’s escape as well.
