Measles Case Confirmed in Burley, Idaho
BOISE, ID – A confirmed case of measles has emerged in Burley following an international traveler’s business trip, as reported by the South Central Public Health District (SCPHD) on Friday. The individual, who is not from Idaho, was in several locations during their infectious period, including EdgeWater Dining and Spirits on May 19 and the Urgent Care of Idaho – Burley Clinic and Intermountain Health Cassia Regional Hospital on May 20.
The affected hotel is actively notifying guests who may be at risk, while SCPHD is working to identify anyone who may have been exposed. Those susceptible could exhibit symptoms between now and June 14, as the initial signs of measles, which include high fever, cough, and runny nose, typically manifest one to two weeks after exposure. Other symptoms may develop in subsequent days, culminating in a characteristic rash.
SCPHD spokesperson Amy Dillon emphasized that even though the case originated from out of state, it still poses a potential exposure risk to Idaho residents. State epidemiologists are in communication with health officials in the traveler’s home area to ensure a thorough investigation.
According to SCPHD Family and Children’s Health director Tanis Maxwell, public safety remains a priority. Individuals experiencing symptoms are urged to contact their healthcare provider without visiting clinics to prevent further spread.
It’s important to note that the individual had received the measles vaccine in childhood, highlighting the rarity of breakthrough cases. The CDC maintains that the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine remains the most effective prevention method. Two doses of the vaccine boast a 97% efficacy rate against measles.
For further inquiries regarding measles or the MMR vaccine, individuals may contact SCPHD at (208) 737-1138.
