IDAHO FALLS — Two senior basketball stars, Peja Weed and Ryan Egbert, have captured the spotlight at the East Idaho Holiday Shootout, earning recognition as East Idaho Sports Co-Athletes of the Week for their performances in leading their respective teams to victory.
Century High School’s Peja Weed was named the Air Force Bracket MVP after his team triumphed over the Sugar-Salem Diggers with a close score of 60-58, concluding a perfect 3-0 run in the tournament. Weed delivered a clutch performance, making a game-winning and-1 three-point play with just 3.2 seconds left, finishing the final match with 17 points.
Bonneville High School senior Ryan Egbert also shone brightly at the tournament. He led his team with 19 points as the Bees defeated the previously unbeaten Snake River Panthers. The Bees capped their own successful run by beating Evanston (WY), 75-64, to secure the Marines Bracket trophy. Bonneville head coach Cortland Hengel praised Egbert for being a versatile player, integral both offensively and defensively.
In addition, Madison High School rounded out the tournament by clinching the Army Bracket trophy, defeating Ridgevue 62-52, also with a strong performance that reflected a solid 3-0 record.
While Bonneville boasts a current record of 6-3, leading the 5A High Country Conference, Century sits slightly behind Preston with a record of 7-3 in the 5A South East Idaho Conference. Both teams are gearing up for crucial matchups next week, and with players like Weed and Egbert, the excitement continues on the court.
